How to Prevent Mold & Mildew Buildup in your Shower and Silicone

February 04, 20252 min read

Silicone is often used in showers and other damp areas because it is resistant to water and can help prevent leaks. However, it is still susceptible to mold and mildew growth if not properly maintained. While the silicone we use contain mildewcides, mold and mildew still thrive in moist environments, and showers provide the perfect conditions for them to grow - warm, humid and damp.

There are a few reasons why your silicone may be developing mold and mildew:

  1. Lack of ventilation: If your bathroom doesn't have proper ventilation, it can create a moist environment that promotes mold and mildew growth. Ensure your bathroom has adequate ventilation, such as by using an exhaust fan or opening a window during and after showering.

  2. Poor cleaning habits: If you're not regularly cleaning your shower, mold and mildew can quickly grow. It's important to regularly clean your shower with an effective cleaner that kills mold and mildew. Make sure to pay special attention to the areas around the silicone sealant.

  3. Old silicone: Silicone sealant can break down over time, and when it does, it can allow water to seep through and create the perfect conditions for mold and mildew growth. If your silicone is old, cracked, or peeling, it may be time to remove and replace it with new sealant.

To prevent mold and mildew growth on your silicone, it's essential to keep your shower clean and dry. We recommend squeegeeing after each shower, cleaning with alcohol solution like Sprayway Foaming Glass Cleaner, and propping your shower door open to maintain air circulation in the space. We also strongly recommend a vent/fan in your bathroom if there is not one present already. Regular cleaning and proper ventilation can go a long way in preventing mold and mildew from taking hold. If you notice any mold or mildew growth on your silicone, it's important to remove it as soon as possible to prevent it from spreading.
